Mr.1980 and Dave B - I also read about the unreleased songs. I think it was an interview with Bob Margoleff somewhere. I also agree about Feeding Off The Love Of The Land - a great song and thankfully has the acoustic feel. I also met David T. Walker the guitarist on Visions a few years ago (he was playing in Lou Rawls band) who confirmed that Stevie was in the studio day and night around the time of Innervisions and that lots of songs were recorded and never released. I only hope the natural feel Stevie has alluded to really has returned on ATTL.
One other interesting note I remember reading somewhere a few years ago - Stevie is one of Eric Clapton's favourite drummers (I am sure they recorded something to gether as well back in the 70's).
Mr. 1980 (18/08/2005 04:31:49)
Dave B,
Yeah, I've heard that Stevie had around 200 songs stockpiled from his 70's period. I don't recall where exactly I read it, though. Stevie has also mentioned that many of his unreleased songs are kept in his head, and not necessarily in a vault.
But don't forget, he has used a lot of his unreleased 70's songs on subsequent albums, and turned many of them into hits in the 80's and 90's. I only wish he could have released them in their original form, and not in the style of the time period in which he finally released them. For instance, imagine "Taboo To Love", "Never In Your Sun", or "Free" as if they were recorded in the mid-70's. Much different sound.
The only "time capsule" song from the 1970's that was recorded, then shelved, then later released exactly as it was recorded is "Feeding Off The Love Of The Land." This was written and recorded during the "Fulfillingness" sessions, and was not released until Jungle Fever came out. And when it was released, it was the SAME track which had been recorded in the 70's. NOT redone or remixed for the 90's crowd. (Although there does exist a revised version which includes a string accompaniment. I prefer the simpler piano-only version.) This song also happens to be one of my all-time favorite Stevie Wonder songs. It's a shame it's so hard to find.

sept 27th is the day we r going to get it its turned in to motown so i hope he brings out another single to like how will i know 27th is the day for the cd
Dave B (17/08/2005 21:39:14)
Mr. 1980!

Regarding the new cut "If You Break My Heart" - it wouldn't surprise me if this is actually an old song that is just now seeing the light of day. Steverino may have written this song back in the 70's for all we know.

Speaking of songs written long ago - did you ever read an article from that time period that stated that Stevie was frequenting the recording studio laying down tracks for song and that at the time of the writing of said article there were some 200+ tapes of songs he had recorded? I read this but now do not recall what magazine the article was from. Can you shed some light on this homeskillet?

Thank you!

Mr. 1980

You're welcome!

I am starting to be inclined as yourself that Sept 27 is the DAY! I have been cautious simply because of the postponements and some of the air was let out my bubble however w/the news that Stevie actually handed over the Master Tape(s) to Motown it is pretty acadamic that this disc is going to be in the stores in the not-too-distant future!

I'm like the McDonald's commercial: "I'M LOVIN' IT!"

If there are any musicians here who still don't have this book (there can't be many, but you never know), check it out on ebay here:

It's priceless, and it's going in 3 hours from now.
Mr. 1980 (16/08/2005 05:06:56)
Dave B,
Thanks for posting that link to the Stevie article. I found it very interesting. Apparently there's a new song on AT2L called "If You Break My Heart". (Not to be confused with "If She Breaks Your Heart" from Jungle Fever..??)
Since the album has obviously been delivered to Motown and is definately in mastering stages, I'm now inclined to belive that September 27th is the actual release date. (Plus I'm sure Stevie wants it out in time for the October 1st Grammy cutoff date.)
So let the countdown begin!

43 DAYS LEFT!
Mr. 1980 (16/08/2005 04:57:05)
Groover,
No, "Justice of the Heart" will probably never see the light of day. The only way I could ever see it coming out in ANY form would be on some kind of Stevie compilation album, but since he already has about a dozen of them, those chances are pretty slim. Sorry.
Groover (15/08/2005 23:37:16)
Are there any plans of releasing the "Justice of the Heart"-song performed with Brenda Russell? A soundtrack for that crappy John Q movie isn´t available...
Dave B (15/08/2005 20:10:50)
Big Ant!

Never mind- I ran across the story from Fox News that ATTL is being "mastered' - these words came directly from Sylvia Rhone's mouth. She's the head honcho @ Motown. She stated these words at Stevie's appearance @ the Apollo. Theater last week I believe.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed that it will ACTUALLY be released at that time.

Regardless I'm sure it will be worth the wait.

For those of you who haven't read the story it is at:

I love your enthusiasm but please tell me where did you read that ATTL is being MASTERED? I'm not saying you are wrong I just want to read it as well.

Thanks!

Baldeagle,
It's on both the 'TV Collection 68-86' and 'Ultimate TV Performances' both available on ebay here:
http://search.ebay.co.uk/stevie-wonder_DVD-Film-TV_W0 QQsofocusZbsQQsbrftogZ1QQfromZR10QQcatrefZC6QQsacatZ11232QQc atrefZC6QQflocZ1QQsargnZ-1QQsaslcZ2QQsadisZ200QQfposZPostcod eQQga10244Z10425QQftrtZ1QQftrvZ1QQfsopZ1QQfsooZ1
Believe me, it's worth having. One minor thing though: on the former collection, it lists 'Maybe your Baby' from 'Media Sound Session '73' but that track's not there on my copy - and I particularly wanted to see it! Still, it's a must-have collection to see Steve in his prime!
BaldEagle (15/08/2005 11:07:05)
Cliff,
What dvd is this that has "All In Love" on it? I have the "Sogns In The Key..." from Vh1. Is there something else?
Cliff (15/08/2005 10:21:09)
Hugo,
I've also read "Stevie Wonder - A Musical Guide...". Although it does offer a few insights fairly interesting to the musician, most of it is subjective assessment of the classic albums (often and irritatingly emphasised by personal remarks in brackets).
I'd prefer a more 'in-studio' look at the making of these albums, but each to his own I suppose.

By the way, I'm sure some of you guys have the DVD that includes Stevie's doodling in the studio (in 1973) with 'All in love is fair' etc. Man, when he sings an alternate take of this song in the studio, it's breathtaking - straight through with not ONE dud note! Amazing stuff.
Mr. 1980 (14/08/2005 21:46:39)
Nick,
The "Wonderlove" DVD is only available on ebay. The disc is a recording of a television show from the 1970's called "Soul", so the video quality is not pristine, but it is quite good nonetheless, as is the sound. The going price is usually about 15 to 20 dollars.
If you can find a copy, I HIGHLY recommend it!! The ENTIRE show is nothing but Stevie singing his hits (plus a few rare jems). Very awesome.
Nick (14/08/2005 11:15:30)
Can someone please let me know where I can buy the wonderlove DVD? thanks!
r taylor (13/08/2005 04:24:01)
