Ben Franklin (13/01/2005 21:36)
its ok mate,no worries.we you all from?anyone from uk?
wes (13/01/2005 21:04)
sorry for being so bitchy, Ben:)
Ben Franklin (13/01/2005 20:30)
point taken wes.

But your right about the music, back in the "golden age" you had to earn that number one spot! it changes like the wind now,all I hear is crap like usher, and whiney other so called "RnB" artists.
and thats another thing...RnB is supposed to be ryhthm and blues, eric clapton was in that genre, though I dont like putting artists in any catorgory.

stevies "songs in the key of life" should be an example for every artist out there, the creativity on that album can be felt on "every" track.

thats my thoughts anyway
wes (13/01/2005 19:30)
also, I'd like to point out that due to technology, singers no longer have to be good anymore. its not required. computers can make them sound good. airbrushing makes them look pretty. sampling makes it so they don't need as much creative effort. put it all in nice little plastic packaging and market it. then all the excited little consumers (you) run out and buy it. all the sudden you've got a hit record and "artist." doesn't matter if its Ashlee Simpson's screeching, Justin Timberlake's whining or Eminem's retarded noises, it will sell. and it does.

in the old days you HAD to be good, period. there was no option of computers that could "make" your voice, like it does for britney spears. perhaps thats why people cared less about a person's looks/weight and more about their actual talent back then. god help aretha franklin if she first tried to have a recording career in this day and age...
wes (13/01/2005 19:30)
to Ben Franklin, sorry if I offended you. I'm not trying to be creative here on this website, there is a lot of dissing going back and forth. this isn't an album I'm working on, its a forum. and being repeatedly referred to as "junior" is dali talking down to me, so why don't you bitch at him?
wes (13/01/2005 18:05)
Dali, what the fuck are you talking about, really. I'm not even aware if this is some kind of arguement/debate or something. I know there was shitty music before and theres shitty music now. but the best music from "then" (whatever time period it is you assume I exclusively listen to, I'm not sure which. lets just say, the "past") is, IN MY OPINION, waaaay better than the best music of today.

would alicia keys be famous if she was fat and ugly? who knows, probably not. I think she's got talent, but as I said before, if she represents one of the best artists of this time, then IN MY OPINION the "golden age" has indeed passed. I say this knowing there are better artists around today than Alicia Keys, they just aren't as popular.

and wtf is with you talking to me like I'm a 5 year old, i bet you didn't realize when I was talking about music I quoted the teacher of a great american songwriter, cole porter. thats DEFINATELY way before this "golden age" you assume I think contains the only quality music in history.

and stop misspelling everything if you really intend to portray yourself as my elder. really, its "evolution," not "evoluting" and "realize," not "relize" dictionary.com is a great site
Dali (13/01/2005 13:50)
Maybe the golden age of the kind of "rap" you like has gone. Just as Rockabily, or even Gregorian songs (which are not as popular has it was during the XV century) has. Styles and fashion change, Music is always evoluting.
Some young people as Junior just don't relize the beauty of what's around, what's new. And eventhough look disappointed that the common people seems to like it!
When the first rap singers appears, their were not considered as a new golden age for music!

Does Alicia Keys would be as famous as she is, if she was fat and uggly?
geturfunkyself2getha (13/01/2005 12:29)
i have 2 agree with everything that wes has sed the "golden age" had definitely passed the days when people could actually sing and write their own songs rather than relying on their looks.prob the only artist i think who is as good at artists from "the golden age" is alicia keys now she can sing and write.and if it werent for "the golden age" dali u wouldnt have the 80's and now u'll notice artists r relying on artists from the golden age 4 hits eg.coolio's gangstas paradise a hit was origionally pastime paradise by stevie and ja rule's livin it up also a hit does it remind u of Do i do also by stevie.
Dali (12/01/2005 23:12)
Thanks for your post Junior. My critic on people living in the past was not limited on Music, even not on Arts. But it seems you need concrete examples to understand some concepts.
Let's take 80's pop music. Songs that we are still hearing now represents just a tiny part of what has been produced. Time makes it selection. And of course what remains is mainly the best. So you are comparing two different periods of time, one limited to its best, the other one with all its crap!
I give you an advice, get a chart list of the 80's and listen to all the songs (if you ever can get a copy of each). You'll be surprise.
Another advice Junior, enjoy the time we are living, creativity is every where!
Ben Franklin (12/01/2005 23:08)
wes,why call dali a dimwit?
why ask stupid questions like "are you smoking crack"

like you said...."whats so creative about dissn people"?

if you have an opinion then fair enough, but theres no need to be judging people(as you have in your last couple of posts)there is no need to be so pompus.
wes (12/01/2005 21:59)
in response to Dali's post, what is your point? I said there was quality music being produced, EVEN today. its just rare, IMO. you also assume that I'm only interested in music from the 60-80s or something, as if there was no good music before that. I said ALL THROUGHOUT HISTORY you dimwit. I listen to a VERY broad variety of music, I don't need to search for creativity in artists that obviously lack it. What's so creative about dissing people, really? you must be smoking crack if you really think most popular music today will be considered part of a "golden age." the "golden age" of rap is already long gone. in the end its all just a matter of opinion, but there's no point in trying to "find" creativity in today's music (especially if you're referring to eminem with that) when there is tons of ageless material already out there. you're the one who is missing out if you block out the past, because thats how music has evolved to where it is today, no matter how crappy it may be. you accuse me of "living in the past," but how? simply because I appreciate music that happened to have been made before I was born? because I don't put an expiration date on art? yea, tell me something about music... junior.
Flukie (11/01/2005 23:56)
It is not just Eminem, it is a lot of others. Know matter how weired we think Michael is the fact still remains that he has not been found guilty. For all whom think it is all right to make fun, put yourself in his shoes and tell me if it makes you happy? Yesterday(1-10-05) I heard a sports caster make reference to a football player who mimed mooning the audiance on the field. His comment was "at least he only mimed it and did not do it like Janet Jackson." Well mister sports guy, she did not do it. Justin did. And by the way, Justin should have not been allowed to perform either. It was wrong for them to kick her off the show and not him. He should have refused to show if she could not. All the other performers should have also backed her. And for all the people coming forward about what they witnessed at neverland, If Michael goes to jail, all of you should be trailing right behind him. Because if you witnessed something and did not report it right then and there, you are just as guilty. Later
Dali (11/01/2005 18:20)
Junior (Wes, may I call you Junior?), your so young and already so presumptuous.
During the "golden age" you mention, some people already found "their" golden age was gone. Of course the music has changed, but the creativity is still there! Just have to find it.
One can't live in the pass.
Hope you will grow Junior.
wes (11/01/2005 16:17)
in response to Nathan's post about the quality of todays music: I totally agree. The "golden age" has indeed passed in my opinion. There is quality music produced today, but it is rare and definately not popularized. what sells today is sex & marketing. publicity stunts and gossip. its not about art anymore, its about showing off abs/ass, selling the most records to high school kids and getting the most grammys, as if it makes you a better artist simply to have them. talent is lacking in the industry, because it is not required anymore. anyways, i'm not even gonna get into it. i could write a book about how most music sucks today.

btw, for others reading, I'm not an "old fart" or something whos "out-of-touch" with the "mainstream." I'm a 19 year old appreciater of true art and I don't get all giddy and wet my pants over some new crap artist every time MTV tells me to. all throughout history you can find great music, even today. but the creative 'peak' i do feel has passed and most people in the industry have lost the original purpose of music. to express and create, to take the listener into the artists' world through their words and music. lyrics and melody that must be so inseparable that they are one.
wes (11/01/2005 15:34)
this forum sucks because other people can post under anybody's name. that and its full of retards now that a plethora of eminem fans have flooded it. it was better before stevie said anything (though I think he was right to do so), because then it was only true stevie fans who appreciate the man and his music occupying this space. now its full of emotionally underdeveloped high school kids who think they know something about music, when they really don't know anything apart from what MTV spoon feeds them. they like what they're told to, which is exactly why they come on this board (that they would never even think of visiting otherwise) dissing legends like Stevie Wonder and Michael Jackson, suggesting Eminem has some sort of higher ground over them, in terms of both morality and talent. what a joke! that right there displays their musical and cultural ignorance, which is why its useless to even bother responding to their inane posts.

Eminem Encore track #12 (02/01/2005 00:23)
"Em Calls Paul (Skit)"

Aye yo Paul, It's Em
I got your call about the Michael Jackson thing
And I know that he's not 'thrilled' about the video
What does he 'wanna be startin' somethin'?'
Well I'll show him who's really 'bad'
Paul, 'the way you make me feel' with these calls
You should really take a look at the 'man in the mirror'
And tell him to 'beat it' because I 'won't stop till I get enough'
Do you 'remember the time' we were watching the 'Billy Jean' video?
Well he'll always be that Michael to me
And it doesn't matter if he's 'black or white'
Because I 'can't stop loving him' and I hate plastic surgeons
And I hope they all fucking die!
How do you like that?
And I like him, I like him a lot
I want to touch him but I can't
Excuse me, I'm taking a shit
Sorry
Anyways, call me back
I have this idea about how I want to end the show
So, hit me when you get this message fucker
Oh, and by the way
No I don't have a new gun [click] (goddamn it)

Holiday shoppers make Eminem No. 1 (31/12/2004 00:19)
LOS ANGELES, California (Billboard) -- Eminem was the top-seller among last-minute holiday shoppers as "Encore" returned to No. 1 on the U.S. album charts last week after a month-long absence.

The rapper's latest Shady/Aftermath/Interscope set jumped two places after selling 430,000 copies in the week ended December 26, a 36 percent increase, according to Nielsen SoundScan data issued Wednesday.

"Encore" now has three non-consecutive weeks atop the chart, including a two-week stay at No. 1 in November. It took over the top spot from 2Pac's posthumous "Loyal to the Game" (Amaru/Interscope), which slid to No. 13 with 219,000 copies.

Holiday shopping also saw sales of all titles in the top tier of The Billboard 200 rise 10 percent or more.

The 17th installment of "NOW That's What I Call Music!" (Sony BMG/Universal/EMI/Zomba/Capitol) held the No. 2 slot for a second week with 356,000 copies.

U2's "How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb" (Interscope) jumped two to No. 3 with 350,000. Destiny's Child's "Destiny Fulfilled" (Sony Urban/Columbia) also jumped two, to No. 4, with sales just shy of U2's "Bomb."

Shania Twain's Mercury Nashville greatest hits set dropped one to No. 5 with 347,000 copies. Usher's "Confessions" (LaFace/Zomba) jumped three to No. 6 with 316,000, pushing past Toby Keith, who moved up one to No. 7 with sales of 289,000 copies for his DreamWorks Nashville/Interscope hits set.

After falling to No. 10 on the previous week's chart, Jay-Z and Linkin Park's "Collision Course" (Machine Shop/Roc-A-Fella/Def Jam) rebounded to No. 8 with 283,000 copies. Green Day's "American Idiot" (Reprise/Warner Bros.) was readmitted to the chart's upper echelon, jumping four to No. 9 after selling 282,000 copies.

After last week's 1-12 spiral, Ludacris' "The Red Light District" (Disturbing Tha Peace/Def Jam South) rose two to No. 10 with sales of 258,000 copies.

Mannie Fresh posted The Billboard 200's top debut with his solo debut, "The Mind of Mannie Fresh" (Cash Money/Universal), which entered at No. 59 with 70,000 units.

Overall U.S. album sales were up 17.5 percent from the previous week at 32.7 million units, a 4.4 percent lead over the same week last year. Sales for 2004 were ahead of 2003 by about 1.4 percent at 665 million units.
